The day I escaped the grip of FEAR who told me I couldn't when it knew I could still rings out clear today. I struggled, cried and fought my way through it proving it wrong and today I stand tall as a children's book. It started with a decision but one that seemed far-fetched. I decided to step out of my comfort zone and write a children's book. Today, I just want to share a tiny bit of what transpired in my mind when I made the decision that day that I could and would do it.
Fear: Stop kidding yourself. You are not a writer so instead try and find something else to do. Find something that you are already used to doing and is good at. This writing thing is not for you so forget it. You will never come up with a story worth reading nor will you ever have the time to do it.
ME: I GOT UP EARLY MORNINGS WHEN THE KIDS WERE ASLEEP AND WRITE. I WROTE THE STORY TITLED "SALON, A DIFFERENT KIND OF DOLL."
Fear: Okay, so you were lucky to come up with a story. So what? You never completed college, your English is poor and not to mention your grammar is not the best. Plus, you will need pictures for a children's book and you cannot draw neither do you have the money to pay an illustrator. Give it up and stop fooling yourself. This wasn't meant for you. Find something else to do that you are capable of doing.
ME: I JOINED A WRITER'S GROUP AND THERE I MET AN ILLUSTRATOR AND AN EDITOR WITHIN MY BUDGET. I CAME UP WITH THE MONEY AND GOT MY ILLUSTRATIONS AND EDITING DONE.
Fear: Yeah, yeah, yeah! Stop smiling, celebrating and feeling accomplished. That was just luck. Be honest with yourself now to save yourself from the pain later. You are not an author nor will you ever be an author. You don't have an agent; join the line. You will never get it published and you definitely don't have the money for printing cost.
ME: I HAD NO CLUE HOW TO FIND A PUBLISHER WHO WOULD TAKE MY STORY. I CONTINUED ON MY PATH SEEKING A PUBLISHER WHEN I CAME IN CONTACT WITH A LADY. SHE GUIDED ME ON THE JOURNEY OF SELF-PUBLISHING AND I GOT MY BOOK PUBLISHED. YES, MY FIRST BOOK TITLED "SALON, A DIFFERENT KIND OF DOLL."
Fear: So what. You got your book printed. Who is going to buy it? It will NEVER sell. You just wasted all that money printing books that no one will ever buy. Plus, you told people about what you were doing. What a shame; now they will just laugh at you. Well, they are already talking and laughing. Talking about you are an author. Ha!
ME: I CONTINUED RESEARCHING AND LISTENING TO THOSE WHO HAVE WALKED THE PATH BEFORE ME. TODAY I SMILE KNOWING I PLACED THE THIRD ORDER OF MY BOOK WHICH WILL BE ARRIVING IN THREE WEEKS UNDER THE NEW TITLE, "THE MANGO SEED DOLL."
ME: LISTEN UP. I MAY NOT BE GOOD AT WHAT I DO TODAY, BUT I WILL USE THE SKILL THAT I HAVE TODAY TO DO WHAT I CAN DO TODAY TO BE GREATER AT WHO I AM TOMORROW. YOU SAID I COULD NOT BUT I DID. I'M OVERJOYED THAT I DIDN'T LISTEN TO YOU.
What am I trying to say here? If we listen to fear we will forever remain in the FREEZE MODE of our COMFORT ZONE. We have to make the decision to take that FIRST step and try. We might not clearly know where it will lead but we have to try. Yes, we will hit a brick wall, but just look up and climb over it. Yes, we will cry but that's okay too. It makes the finish line even sweeter.
The day I held the first printed copy of my children's book in my hands is one I will never forget. I am now retiring the title "Salon A Different Kind of Doll" and looking forward to the print with the new title "The Mango Seed Doll" which will be available end of October 2018. So excited. Yes I can and I DID.
I know that I still have a long way to go, but I am happy with where I am today. I am happy because despite what FEAR said on that day, "I" decided and I took that first step.
